Australia Genuine Student Requirement

A focused guide to the Genuine Student questions, evidence and assessment factors used in Australia’s Student visa Subclass 500 process.

The Genuine Student requirement is not a generic statement about wanting to study in Australia. Home Affairs assesses whether the application, the responses and the evidence form a coherent case for genuine entry and stay as a student.
This guide focuses only on Genuine Student. General Student 500 requirements, costs, OSHC, financial capacity, English, work rights and family remain on the main Student 500 page.
The application form

The Genuine Student questions that structure the application

Home Affairs says the online application asks for specific information to address the GS criteria.

1. Current circumstances

Explain your current circumstances, including family and community ties, employment and economic circumstances.

2. Course, provider and Australia

Explain why you want to study this course in Australia with this particular provider and show your understanding of the course and of studying and living in Australia.

3. Benefit of the course

Explain how completing the course will benefit you and how it fits your educational or professional direction.

4. Other relevant information

Include any other relevant information that helps explain your circumstances and study decision.

Home Affairs also says there is an additional question for applicants who have previously held a student visa or who apply in Australia from a non-student visa.
150
maximum words per response

150 words per response — and the responses must be in English

Official guidance sets a maximum of 150 words per response. It is not a target of 150 words; it is a limit.

Home Affairs prefers applicants to answer the GS questions directly in the application form rather than relying on a separate GS statement.

Evidence should support what the responses say

Home Affairs says supporting documents should be attached in ImmiAccount and that greater weight is given to statements supported by evidence.

Depending on the facts, relevant material may include previous study, employment, economic activity, academic history, circumstances in the country of residence and other supporting documentation.

How it is assessed

GS is assessed across the circumstances as a whole, not as a mechanical checklist

Direction No. 106 says the listed factors guide decision makers and should not simply be used as a checklist.

Circumstances in the home country or country of residence

Assessment can consider why similar study is not undertaken locally, as well as personal ties, employment, economic circumstances and other relevant factors.

Potential circumstances in Australia

Assessment can consider knowledge of the proposed course, provider and living in Australia, previous study and the research undertaken into the proposed study and living arrangements.

Value of the course to the future

Assessment can consider whether the course is consistent with education or employment and whether it may improve future employment or professional prospects.

Immigration history

Home Affairs can consider visa and travel history, previous applications, refusals or cancellations and relevant immigration compliance.

Any other relevant matter

The assessment is not limited to predetermined categories. Other facts relevant to the particular application may also be considered.

Consistency matters more than a “perfect” answer

GS responses should align with the real facts of the application: course, previous study, employment, funding, immigration history and documentary evidence.

A memorised response or wording designed to sound “correct” does not replace verifiable facts or consistent evidence.

GS does not require pretending you would never consider another migration pathway

Home Affairs recognises that genuine students may develop skills Australia needs and may later choose to apply for permanent residence. Future intentions of that kind do not themselves count against an applicant under GS. The focus remains on genuinely studying and complying with applicable visa conditions.
