F-1 visa financial evidence

How to connect your funding sources, Form I-20 financial information and the evidence supporting the real cost of studying and living in the United States.

The goal is not an isolated bank figure. It is a verifiable funding story that fits your actual program.

What the financial evidence is actually testing

The Department of State says a student-visa applicant may be asked for evidence showing how educational, living and travel costs will be paid. Consular guidance also requires sufficient resources to study without relying on unauthorized employment.

First year

Consular guidance looks for enough readily available funding to meet the expenses of the first year of study.

Later years

For the remainder of the program, funding may come from the same source or from other specifically identified and reliable sources.

Build a clear funding map

Personal funds

The evidence should make it possible to understand how much is available, who controls the funds and how they relate to program costs.

Family or sponsor support

The relationship to the person providing support, that person’s financial capacity and the commitment to support you should be clear and documentable.

Scholarships, assistantships and fellowships

Identified institutional funding can form part of the financial plan when it actually exists and can be documented.

Loans and other identified sources

A concrete existing source is different from a future plan or hoped-for funding. Evidence should point to real and verifiable resources.

Your Form I-20 is part of the financial story

The SEVIS process includes expense and funding information. Your supporting evidence should therefore make sense alongside the program, costs and funding information reflected in your school documentation.

Consistency matters

Your evidence should tell one financial story: who is paying, what each source provides, when funds are available and how the funding fits the duration and cost of your studies.

What this guide does not cover

This page is limited to financial ability and evidence. The complete F-1 route remains on the main visa page, while general interview preparation remains with the F-1 interview guide.
