Australia 189 Points, EOI and Invitation

A focused guide to how the subclass 189 points score, SkillSelect Expression of Interest and invitation stage fit together before a visa application can be lodged.

Minimum points threshold 65 points

Meeting 65 points allows you to meet the minimum points threshold, but it does not guarantee an invitation.

Expression of Interest SkillSelect EOI

The EOI is the step used to express interest before an invitation to apply for the visa.

EOI validity 2 years

A submitted EOI remains active in SkillSelect for two years unless its status changes earlier.

After invitation 60 days

If invited, you have 60 days from the invitation date to complete and submit the visa application.

SkillSelect

The 189 points score and the invitation are different decisions

Subclass 189 is points-tested, but the minimum threshold should not be confused with an invitation. SkillSelect uses the information in your EOI to calculate an indicative points score. Meeting or exceeding the threshold is necessary for this points-tested pathway, but Home Affairs expressly states that it does not guarantee that an invitation will be issued.

Points score

What contributes to the SkillSelect points picture?

Your EOI asks for personal, educational and professional information that contributes to the points score. Home Affairs identifies factors including age, work experience, educational qualifications and English-language proficiency.

Age

Age is one of the factors used in the points-tested skilled migration framework.

English

English results are entered in the EOI. Higher recognised English levels can affect the points score.

Skilled employment

Work-history information is entered so relevant skilled employment can be assessed within the points framework.

Educational qualifications

The EOI asks for qualification, institution, study-location and study-date information.

Before the EOI

What needs to be ready before the EOI?

The EOI is not the place to discover the basic case architecture for the first time. The nominated occupation, skills-assessment position and relevant English information should be established before relying on the indicative SkillSelect score.

EOI

What happens when you submit the EOI?

SkillSelect records the information you provide and gives you an indicative points score. The EOI is an expression of interest in receiving an invitation; it is not itself the subclass 189 visa application.

Create the EOI

Set up the SkillSelect account and enter the required personal information.

Complete the skilled-migration details

Add the occupation, skills assessment, English, education and work-history information that applies to your case.

Review the indicative score

Check the points position generated from the information entered before submitting the EOI.

Submit the EOI

Once submitted, the EOI enters the SkillSelect system for possible invitation during its active period.

Maintaining the EOI

Can you update an EOI after submission?

Yes. Home Affairs says an EOI can be accessed and updated before an invitation is received. Changes can matter because they may alter the points score.

Once an invitation to apply has been received, the EOI can no longer be updated.
Invitation

What an invitation changes

An invitation moves the case from the SkillSelect expression-of-interest stage to the visa-application stage. Home Affairs gives an invited applicant 60 days from the date of invitation to complete and submit the visa application online.

65

Why 65 points is not an invitation score

The 65-point figure is the minimum threshold identified by Home Affairs for the points-based 189, 190 and 491 visas. It is not a promise that an applicant will receive an invitation. Treating the minimum threshold as a guaranteed invitation outcome is one of the most important distinctions to avoid.

Avoid

Common EOI and points mistakes

Sequence

A cleaner sequence for a subclass 189 case

1

Establish the 189 case

Confirm the occupation, skills assessment, English position and general subclass 189 eligibility on the main visa pathway.

2

Calculate the points position

Review the factors that contribute to the points-tested score and identify which claimed points need evidence.

3

Build and submit the EOI

Enter the SkillSelect information accurately and review the indicative score before submission.

4

Maintain the EOI

Keep the EOI current during its active period until an invitation is received or the EOI expires.

5

Act on an invitation

If invited, move to the visa-application stage within the 60-day invitation period.

Check your 189 pathway before relying on the points score

The EYM assessment keeps the points calculation inside the existing skilled-migration pathway and identifies what still needs verification before you rely on an EOI position.
