Australia Skilled Independent Visa — Subclass 189

Subclass 189 is Australia’s independent points-tested skilled migration pathway. It does not depend on employer sponsorship or state or territory nomination. The case turns on occupation, skills assessment, English, points, SkillSelect, invitation and evidence.

Permanent visa
Points-tested
65-point threshold
No employer or state nomination
65 points is the minimum threshold for the points-tested skilled visas, but reaching the threshold does not guarantee an invitation.

How the subclass 189 pathway works

The order matters. EYM treats each stage as a separate evidence checkpoint rather than assuming that a points score alone establishes eligibility.

1. Establish the occupation

Confirm the nominated occupation and the relevant assessing authority for the subclass 189 pathway.

2. Obtain the skills assessment

The relevant skills assessment is established before the Expression of Interest is submitted.

3. Establish English and points

Age, English, skilled employment, qualifications and other applicable factors feed the indicative points calculation.

4. Submit the SkillSelect EOI

The Expression of Interest records the skilled-migration claims and indicative points score. It is not a visa application.

5. Receive an invitation

A visa application can proceed only after invitation. Meeting the minimum points threshold does not guarantee invitation.

6. Lodge the visa application

After invitation, the applicant must substantiate the claims made during the skilled-migration process with the required evidence.

Permanent work and family position

The Skilled Independent visa subclass 189 is a permanent skilled migration visa. A holder is an Australian permanent resident and may live and work in Australia.

The points-tested subclass 189 does not require employer sponsorship or state or territory nomination. Before applying, the applicant must follow the SkillSelect process and receive an invitation to apply. Occupation, skills assessment, English and points claims require route-specific evidence review, and meeting the minimum points threshold does not guarantee an invitation.

Eligible family members may be included as additional applicants, subject to the applicable relationship, health, character, English and visa-charge requirements for each applicant.

Government visa charge

Base main-applicant Visa Application Charge
AUD 6,135

This is the currently recorded base government charge for the primary applicant. It is not an all-inclusive case price. Additional applicant charges, second instalments and other government or third-party costs may apply according to the case.

Common mistakes this pathway exposes

  • Treating 65 points as a guarantee of invitation.
  • Preparing an EOI before confirming the occupation and skills-assessment position.
  • Relying on a self-calculated points total without evidence for every claimed factor.
  • Confusing subclass 189 with subclass 190 state nomination or employer-sponsored pathways.
  • Treating the base government charge as the total migration-process cost.

Pre-application control checklist

  • Nominated occupation identified and applicable occupation-list position checked.
  • Relevant assessing authority and skills-assessment evidence reviewed.
  • English evidence and test validity reviewed.
  • Points claims reconstructed from source evidence rather than estimates.
  • SkillSelect EOI status confirmed.
  • Invitation status confirmed before assuming a visa application can proceed.
  • Health, character, identity and family evidence mapped.
  • Government charges reviewed for the actual applicant composition.

Turn the points estimate into an evidence-backed pathway

EYM’s skilled-migration assessment uses the existing 189/190/491 specialist engine to calculate possible routes indicatively and identify what still requires professional verification.
