Australia 189 skills assessment

How the nominated occupation, relevant assessing authority and assessment details connect to a subclass 189 SkillSelect EOI.

For SkillSelect, the skills assessment is not a generic document. It needs to relate to the occupation you are nominating and the relevant Australian assessing authority.

The assessment comes before the EOI

Home Affairs says you need a skills assessment in the occupation you are nominating before you can submit the Expression of Interest. The assessment is an independent assessment of your skills and qualifications by a relevant Australian assessing authority.

Start with the nominated occupation

The occupation is the anchor. The skilled occupation framework identifies the occupation and the relevant assessing authority used for the skills-assessment position.

Use the relevant assessing authority

Different occupations can have different assessing authorities. The authority named for the occupation is therefore part of the case architecture, not an interchangeable provider.

Details SkillSelect asks you to carry into the EOI

Assessment date

Home Affairs says the EOI includes the date of the skills assessment.

Assessing authority

The EOI includes the name of the assessing authority that issued the assessment.

Reference or receipt number

The assessment reference or receipt number is another detail Home Affairs says you need for the EOI.

Assessment outcome

Keep the assessment outcome and the underlying authority documentation aligned with the occupation and details you later rely on through SkillSelect and the visa application.

Occupation and assessing-authority rules can change

Home Affairs identifies LIN 19/051 for the subclass 189 Points-tested occupation and assessing-authority framework. Always use the current occupation list and current instrument rather than relying on an old occupation or authority mapping.

The assessing authority controls its own assessment evidence

Home Affairs identifies the relevant authority, but the assessment itself is conducted by that authority. Qualification, employment, registration or other evidence requirements can therefore depend on the occupation and authority involved.

Keep the assessment, EOI and visa case consistent

The nominated occupation, assessing authority, assessment date and reference details should remain internally consistent as the case moves from assessment to EOI and, if invited, to the visa application.

What this guide does not own

This page focuses on the skills-assessment position. The main subclass 189 page retains complete eligibility and the overall visa pathway. The separate points guide retains points, SkillSelect, EOI updates and invitation mechanics.
